  • David vs Goliath – Myatt vs Mercola

    David and Goliath

Dr. Myatt takes on Dr. Mercola

    By Dr. Dana Myatt

Dr. Mercola is a well-known figure in holistic medicine, mostly because of the large reach of his holistic health newsletter. He has written some good articles that are supported by science and facts. But he has also published some seriously flawed articles, in fact, some that are downright bogus. I usually don’t call him to task, but this time he has gone WAY too far.

His recent article contains not one shred of credible proof. Instead, it is a thinly-veiled sales-pitch for his own multiple.

However, there are a lot of people out there (usually not MY customers and patients!) who accept everything they’re fed, like babies taking pablum.

I use Mercola’s own article to show you how to critically evaluate ALL health and medical articles you read.

You can learn to tell the difference between good science — even if it doesn’t “agree” with mainstream — while keeping yourself safe from hype and hucksterism. Here’s today’s lesson in holistic health propaganda and how to stay safe:

  • Chemicals That Kill? Or Just Frighten?

    By Nurse Mark

The human organism is a wild and wonderful place – we are a chemical soup of minerals, acids, electrolytes, proteins, and fats. (well, proteins and fats are acids…) This does lead to a whole lot of confusion though, and sometimes outright deception by those who would have us believe that such-and-such spooky-sounding chemical must be bad for us…

Here is a case in point:

    Dave wrote:

I have a nephew who is a chemical engineer and he tells me Aspartame, when warmed up equals formaldehyde. Ill bet that’s as safe as all the other garbage the AMA says we need. I’m still wondering what good nicotinic acid does for me. That’s what niacin is isn’t it?

Dave knows correctly that formaldehyde, which is a breakdown product of Aspartame the artificial sweetener, is not very good for us – after all, it is used to preserve cadavers, right? (see our HealthBeat Article Is Nutrasweet (Aspartame) Safe?)

Yes Dave, Aspartame is a spooky chemical and your nephew is right. Formaldehyde, while it does occur naturally in very minute amounts in the human body, is not something we want to ingest.

This is much the same situation as the sodium benzoate and citric acid or ascorbic acid combo that is present in so many soft drinks – and can break down into benzene, a known and potent carcinogen. Yet another well-meant chemical offering with unintended and poisonous consequences.

But that leaves us with the $64,000 question: which “chemicals” are good for us, and which are not?

    Here is a “Pop Quiz”:

Which of the following chemicals are unsafe for humans?

    • Strontium
    • Deoxyribonucleic acid
    • Boron
    • Muriatic acid
    • Selenium
    • Cyanocobalamin
    • Ascorbic acid
    • Dihydrogen Monoxide

How did you do? Let’s look at each of these ominous-sounding chemicals:

    • Strontium – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
No, not the radioactive fallout stuff, this trace mineral is essential to strong, healthy bones. Read more about why we need strontium here.
    • Deoxyribonucleic acid – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
Actually, this rather ominous sounding chemical is essential for life as we know it – it is the fancy name for what we all know as DNA. It contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms, including us. We all begin as a little bit of DNA – the twinkle in our parents eyes perhaps…
    • Boron – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
Another trace element vital to good bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis. Boron is an important part of Dr. Myatt’s Cal-Mag Amino – find out more here.
    • Muriatic Acid – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
“Now wait just a minute” you’re saying, “That stuff is nasty – it will burn you!” Yep, you’re right – it is nasty stuff – but it is also essential to your ability to digest food. Also known as hydrochloric acid, it is produced naturally by a healthy stomach, and a deficiency of this important chemical can lead to all sorts of problems. Learn More about gastric acid and digestive health here.
    • Selenium – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
Selenium is another trace element that we need in just the right amount – too much and it can be toxic, too little and we become deficient and unhealthy. Learn why selenium is so important here.
    • Selenomethionine – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
Selenomethionine is an organic form of selenium and is easier for the human body to absorb than selenite, which is an inorganic form.
    • Cyanocobalamin – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
Despite the ominous name sounding like something to do with cyanide, this is a chemical name for vitamin B12 – even the FDA says we must have adequate intakes of this important vitamin to keep healthy. Read up about B12 the essential energy vitamin here.
    • Ascorbic acid – Safe or Not? Answer: Safe
That one was easy, right? Just another name for vitamin C, and a name that we all recognize. Did you know that it is used as a food additive to prevent oxidation, and it is also used in the making of plastics? Vitamin C is essential for health – find out why here.
    • Dihydrogen Monoxide
Normally colorless, odorless, and tasteless, DHMO can be dangerous. Also known as hydroxyl acid, it is a major chemical of industry. It is responsible for numerous deaths every year, and children are especially at risk from it’s dangers. It is used by industry in it’s solid, liquid, and gaseous forms – and all can cause tissue damage. It is used as a solvent and a coolant and is used extensively in the nuclear industry. It is also used as a fire retardant.
So, is this chemical Safe or Not? Answer: You decide – it’s more commonly called water.
    • Here’s a fun little video by comedians Penn and Teller showing how people can be bamboozled into doing silly things by being frightened with scary sounding terminology.

Like many things, these and a lot of other nasty sounding chemicals have some very important uses and functions within our bodies. As with most things, they need to be in the right place at the right time and in the right amount in order to be beneficial rather than harmful.

So, pyridine-3-carboxylic acid, AKA nicotinic acid, AKA Niacin, AKA vitamin B3 is the only substance (dare we say “drug”?) that has been proven to reduce mortality from elevated cholesterol levels. It also improves microcirculation. Read about how the Coronary Drug Project found that niacin was the only “drug” that actually reduced mortality.

Not bad for a spooky-sounding chemical, right?

And these other scary-sounding chemicals? As Penn and Teller demonstrate in their video, unscrupulous people can prey on the fears of others by using language emotionally loaded with frightening terminology to achieve their own ends.

Whether that is to persuade folks to sign a petition to ban water, or, as has been happening recently in the nutrition industry where certain marketers are offering sales-pitches that rely on generating fear about “dangerous chemicals” in competitors products in order to sell their own.

One such recent sales tactic whips up fear about a substance called magnesium stearate – and Dr. Myatt addressed that deception in a HealthBeat video that you can watch – check out Dr. Myatt’s HealthBeat News article and video debunking Dr. Mercola and his treatment of magnesium stearate here!

  • Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy – Dr. Myatt Brings You The Truth

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy Is A Complicated Subject.

Because it is so complicated it is a subject surrounded by half-truths, urban legends, and outright B.S. (that’s Bad Science…)

Bio-Identical hormone replacement isn’t just for women any more. Men benefit as well.

But whether you are a man or a woman, how can you know what is real, and what is hype? What is safe, and how can you know that you are receiving the best advice from your doctor on this important subject?

Dr. Myatt has done the deep research on this issue and has combined cutting-edge findings with her more than two decades of clinical experience in Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy to create a balanced and heavily referenced position paper that discusses Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy treatment modalities, hormone testing, and the pros and cons of Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy and conventional hormone therapy.

  • Popular Drug Causes Cancer – And The FDA Knows It!

Anyone Who Still Believes That “FDA Approval” Means That A Drug Is Safe Or Effective Is Living In A Fantasy World!

    By Nurse Mark

First, the most important fact about this drug: It was the tenth-best selling drug in the U.S. in 2008, with sales exceeding $2.4 billion. (1)

With money like that at stake, the rest of facts of this story should not come as any surprise.

    The drug?

Actos – a diabetes drug manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals.

    The problem?

    Bladder cancer. And more.

    How big is the problem?

    Huge.

Initial studies showed a 40% increase in the risk of developing bladder cancer in persons using Actos for more than a year. (2)

Another newer study shows that people who use this drug for more than two years have an 83% increased risk of developing bladder cancer. (3)

Let’s put that a little differently: if your doctor has you on Actos for two years or more (and conventional medicine considers diabetes to be a “lifetime” disease – as in “You’ll have to take these drugs for the rest of your life!”) you have a 17% chance of NOT getting bladder cancer.

I wouldn’t go to Las Vegas with those odds… much less gamble my life.

Who knew what – and when did they know it?

From the FDA’s own “Safety Announcement”:

In preclinical carcinogenicity studies of pioglitazone [Actos], bladder tumors were observed in male rats receiving doses of pioglitazone that produced blood drug levels equivalent to those resulting from a clinical dose. Additionally, results from two, three-year controlled clinical studies of Actos […] demonstrated a higher percentage of bladder cancer cases in patients receiving Actos versus comparators.

Preclinical means ‘way back before the drug was ever allowed to be given to humans. That’s right – in the earliest days of this drug, researchers (and presumably the FDA) knew that it was causing bladder cancer in rats.

Then, not one, but two clinical trials showed that the stuff was causing bladder cancer in people too.

And yet, the FDA approved the drug. For shame!

So, is that all? (as if bladder cancer isn’t bad enough…)

In March of 2007 Takeda was forced to admit that Actos was causing a greater incidence of fractures of the upper arms, hands and feet in female diabetics. (4)

And yet, the FDA allowed continued sales the drug. For shame!

Also in 2007, Takeda further warned that: (4)

    • “… [Actos] can cause fluid retention when used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic agents, including insulin. Fluid retention may lead to or exacerbate heart failure.”
    • “… patients with a history of previously existing cardiac disease were reported to develop congestive heart failure (CHF) when treated with pioglitazone [Actos]…”
    • “Reports of hepatitis and of hepatic enzyme elevations to three or more times the upper limit of normal (ULN)
have been received in post marketing experience with pioglitazone. Very rarely, these reports have involved
hepatic failure with or without fatal outcome, …”
    • “ACTOS may also be associated with hypoglycemia, edema, anemia, weight gain, and/or ovulation in
      premenopausal, anovulatory women.”
    • “In US placebo-controlled ACTOS monotherapy clinical trials, the most common adverse events (Ž5%) were
upper respiratory tract infection, headache, sinusitis, myalgia, tooth disorder, aggravated diabetes mellitus, and
      pharyngitis.”

And yet, the FDA continued to allow sales the drug. For shame!

    So, to sum up:

We have a drug that was known from the very earliest animal trials to cause bladder cancer, and then in human trials it caused broken bones, heart failure, hepatitis and even liver failure, anemia, infections, headaches, sinusitis, muscle pains, tooth problems and sore throats. Not only that, but it sometimes made diabetes, the very problem it was being given for, worse!

All this in a drug that doesn’t really work very well even when it does work – according to the FDA; “Across the approved doses Actos reduced HbA1c compared to placebo by an average of 1.5%.”

    Wow – a whole, whopping 1.5%!

And yet the FDA still allows the drug to be sold. For shame!

Why would the sale of this dangerous drug still be allowed by the FDA – the federal agency charged with protecting Americans from harmful food and drugs?

For the answer to that I suggest you go back to the first, the most important fact about this drug: It was the tenth-best selling drug in the U.S. in 2008, with sales exceeding $2.4 billion. (1)

    So, what’s the solution?

What can be done – safely – about type II diabetes, “pre-diabetes, ” “metabolic syndrome,” and the other names that conventional medicine gives to this disorder?

    Plenty!

In fact, Dr. Myatt has a better than 90% success rate at correcting this problem within 90 days or less and she proves it with conventional hemoglobin A1c tests returned to normal, non-diabetic levels. No dangerous drugs, no strange or dangerous diets, just solid healthy success.

At The Wellness Club we don’t believe that type II diabetes is a “lifetime problem” – we fix it so you can get on with your life – no drugs, and no bladder cancer!

  • An Apology From Dr. Myatt And Nurse Mark

If you recently received a piece of spam, junk email bearing a return address of DrMyattsWellnessClub.com we want to offer our sincere apologies.

At The Wellness Club we hate spam and junk emails as much as you do – maybe even more.

Your email information is confidential and safe with us – we never share that information with anyone else – not for any reason, ever.

So, how did junk emails get sent out bearing our return address? Here’s how it happened:

We used to have a convenience feature on our website called a “Tell-A-Friend.” This was a handy little doohickey that made it easy for you to tell someone else about a web page or product that you found on our website; with just a couple of clicks it would send your friend a link to the page and a small message from you – using our email system. It was handy, convenient, and lots of people really liked it and used it often to share information about natural health.

It seems that the spammers discovered that it is a handy thing too. Last night a spammer in the Philippines used our Tell-A-Friend to send out junk email to thousands of addresses on his list.

The spammer had stolen our email service and then used it to do his dirty work, like someone stealing a car and using it to commit a robbery.

Your email addresses and other information were never compromised – the spammer had to  use his own database of addresses to send to using our email service (and consequently our return address.)

Still, because we are absolutely opposed to spam in any form, we have removed the Tell-A-Friend convenience feature so that this can never happen again.

We feel like The Wellness Club has been violated and we are sorry that the spammer was able to exploit and abuse a convenience feature on our website.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Myatt & Nurse Mark
